…imagine a world in which everyone and everything consists of interwoven and interconnected lines…they are visible and invisible…they coexist, morph and transform…where every contact leaves a trace…

This is a work I conceived after I read Tim Ingold’s Lines. What struck me immediately was the sentence: ‘what do walking, weaving, observing, storytelling, singing, drawing and writing have in common? The answer is that they all proceed along lines.’ From this, I realised how things first thought very different actually have deep connections. This provided the basis for a series of workshops with my collaborators in which we discussed what we thought lines meant to us. The recorded observations form the narrative elements of the piece. The work is for animated film, live electronics and improvising performers. But it also has a theatrical element in that the performers create an enhanced 3D mise-en-sceÌ€ne by tying twine in various directions and angles from the screen to the audience. The work is thus a meditation on the idea of lines that may act for many things. Yes, Ingold’s storytelling and writing, etc., but also the lines in spoken narratives, the transformation of the lines drawn by the elbow of the violinist into the invisible lines of a melody—the visual thus has an aural implication. In the pursuit of establishing a cohesive framework for all participants, the primary objective is to delve into the collective conceptualization of authorship, seeking to foster collaborative endeavours. Through the cultivation of a shared framework, participants are encouraged to engage in a collective exploration of authorial dynamics with an emphasis on a mutual contribution fostering an interdisciplinary environment conductive to co-creation.
